Cass County is part of the South Bend–Mishawaka, IN-MI Metropolitan Statistical Area, which has a total population of 316,663, and is considered a part of the picturesque Michiana region. Named after Lewis Cass, the Michigan Territorial Governor in 1829, the county boasts a rich history and a strong connection to the United States' past. Cass later became the Secretary of War under President Andrew Jackson, adding to the county's historical significance. The Criffield-Whiteley House, a stunning Queen Anne-style residence, is located at 601 Main Street in Dowagiac, Michigan. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016 and designated a Michigan Historic Site in 2019, this exceptional property is a must-see when visiting the area.
Built in 1897 by Fred Corber for Charles and Cora Criffield, the design was inspired by an 1893 pattern book of houses and cottages by D.F. Hopkins, a renowned Grand Rapids architect. The house was a marvel of its time, equipped with modern amenities such as plumbing, electricity, and exquisite woodwork. The foundation was crafted from cut Michigan fieldstone, which was sourced from the Criffield's farm.
Over the years, the house has seen a series of prominent owners, including Harry H. Whiteley, who played a crucial role in shaping Michigan's public land policy, and his wife Sara Ethel, who contributed significantly to the local community. Each family who has owned the house has lovingly preserved its historic charm and character, maintaining the original structure and style.
The current owners, Matt and Alexia Money, have continued the legacy of preserving and protecting the home's history. They have updated the house with modern conveniences while retaining its original charm. The Money family has meticulously restored the hardwood floors, updated the bathrooms with ceramic tiles, and maintained the property's impeccable landscaping.
